Make-A-Wish
Make-A-Wish Foundation of America grants the wishes of children under the age
of 18 with life-threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope,
strength and joy. Make-A-Wish was founded in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona by a
small group of citizens who wanted a seven-year old dying boy named Chris
Greicius to realize his dream of becoming a police officer. They made Chris an
official Arizona State Trooper complete with uniform, badge, boots and helmet.
The delight in having one child's dream come true has provided the inspiration
behind Make-A-Wish Foundation as the largest wish-granting organization in the
world with 80 chapters in the United States and 20 international affiliates.
Over 66,000 children have been granted wishes through the generosity of private
donors, celebrities and 18,0000 volunteers nationwide.
Randy has been actively involved with the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Western &
Central Massachusetts, the 62nd Make-A-Wish chapter in the United States
founded on January 18, 1987. Since 1994 Randy has participated in the annual
All-stars Softball games and the Annual Stars for Wishes Dinner & Fashion shows.
Noticing the organization was a struggling one whose hearts were bigger than
their pocketbooks, Randy became involved through two friends, actor Chris Cass
(Loving) and Brenden Higgens. Both encouraged many of the ABC daytime soap
actors, writers and production staff from Loving, One Life to Live, and All
My Children to support the struggling chapter.
The Foundation is a non-profit, tax exempt, charitable organization serving the
Bershire, Franklin, Hampden, Hampshire and Worcester counties. Since 1987,over
590 wishes have been granted. The chapter will grant their 600th wish late this
winter.
