Biography/Professional Highlights
Randolph Mantooth, who starred in the television series Emergency! as paramedic/firefighter
John Gage, was born in Sacramento,
California. Due to his father’s job in the construction industry, Randy, his
brother Don, and two sisters Nancy and Tonya lived in 24 states before the
family
settled down in Santa Barbara, California. From childhood Randy was
fascinated with acting. While attending San Marcos High School the strong drama
programs solidified his desire to pursue a career in dramatic arts. After high
school Randy enrolled in Santa Barbara City College where he continued his
educational
studies. It was here that he realized he wanted to be a
professional actor. He left Santa Barbara City College and received a
scholarship to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. After completion
of the two year accredited program with courses that included the classics such
as Shakespearean Theater, Greek Tragedies and contemporary plays of the 20th
century, with additional classes in movement, ballet, mime, diction, fencing
and the ever popular "How to Laugh on Stage", Randy was prepared for the lead
role in the
play “Philadelphia Here I Come”. His
performance as “Gar” was garnered with the Charles Jehlenger Award an honor he
shared with fellow actor Brad Davis.
In the audience of “Philadelphia
Here I Come” was Eleanor Kilgallen of the Universal Studios talent program.
After seeing Randy in the play she offered him a contract with Universal
Studios.
After giving the offer serious consideration he decided to accept it
and move back to California where he honed his craft appearing in numerous
primetime TV series such as the Emmy-nominated
The Bold Ones, Adam-12,
McCloud, Alias Smith and Jones, Owen Marshall
and Marcus Welby, M.D..
The Executive Producer of Emergency!, Robert A. Cinader, saw Randy in a small pivotal role on
The Bold Ones, and he knew instantly that he found his “John Gage”. Randy was
brought in and paired with actor Kevin Tighe to star in Emergency! on NBC. For over six and half years, Randy depicted
paramedic/firefighter “John Gage” as part of a paramedic team assigned to Squad
51 of the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
Responding to
accidents or dangerous rescues in an “emergency room on wheels”, with
directions via biophone from medical personnel back at the hospital, paramedics
“John Gage” and “Roy DeSoto” performed Advance Lifesaving (ALS) techniques to
stabilize injured, ill, and dying patients before transporting them to a
medical facility. Emergency! aired
129 episodes and seven two-hour movies with a national audience that averaged
30 million viewers each week.
