Robert A. Cinader was the
creator and Executive Producer of Emergency!
The show, perhaps even nationwide Paramedic Programs, would not
have existed without him. Bob joined Mark VII
Ltd. at Universal as producer of Dragnet in 1968. He became
deeply involved with the Los Angeles Police Department, working on story
ideas in connection with the show. While working on Dragnet, Bob conceived a
show about two uniformed police officers, something that hadn’t been
done before. Thus Adam-12
was born. It was the first
vignette show on television, a form that became very popular with most
police shows in the last 30 years. Universal Studios then asked Bob to come up
with an international rescue show, but he discovered something better,
something closer to home: a
pilot paramedic program that originated in Northern Ireland and was
mandated by the California State Legislature for a probationary period
in Los Angeles County. Bob
created a show around the program, his theory being you could educate
people, if they didn’t realize you were doing it.
Bob became immersed in his research on the paramedic program.
From that passion, which lasted the rest of his life, Emergency!
was created. From the first
half-season in 1971, to the last season of six two-hour specials in
1978, Bob’s genius guided the writers, actors, and production crew. Emergency! became a phenomenon which helped
create paramedic programs all over the country. The show brought
attention and acclaim to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.
More importantly, it showed the audience and public officials
across the country that lives could be saved by local paramedic
programs. Many Emergency! Medical Service organizations have
acknowledged and honored Bob for making significant contributions to
improving emergency medical services in the United States. |

Bob and Jean
Cinader were married for 31 years.
Jean shared her thoughts with us on the 30th anniversary of "Emergency!" |
|
Jean’s
Message to Randy “You’re
looking awfully good considering you were only twelve when the series
ended!” J What
does Jean think Bob Cinader would want to say to the fans on the 30th
Anniversary? “The
ripple effects from Emergency! go on forever.
The good the show has done is endless.” Jean’s
memories of the show “Too many to be re-told, but the best of all is that everyone was one big family. The friendships we all made still endure today.” Jean’s
favorite anecdote from the 127 dedication ceremony “Right
at the beginning of my acceptance speech in Bob's honor, a series of
fire sirens could be heard passing Station 127. In an instant, many fire
department members started to get up and investigate. It was impossible
for anyone to hear my speech over the loud fire
engine sounds, so I just said "They're playing his song!" and
I returned to my seat. Turns out there was a huge explosion and
tremendous fire at a gasoline storage facility nearby, requiring lots of
personnel to combat it." |
